THE SPAR Madibaz netball team got their campaign off to a rocky start on day one of the University Sport South Africa (Ussa) tournament in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

In their opening game, the hosts went down fighting with a narrow 35-37 loss to Kovsies (University of the Free State).

Later in the day, the Madibaz suffered a 31-46 defeat at the hands of Maties (Stellenbosch University).

A total of 34 universities, including defending champions Tuks, are in action at the five-day national student tournament at NMMU.

The top 12 teams in the A Section will be vying for overall honours and a spot at the prestigious Varsity Netball competition, which starts in September.

Only the top eight teams will qualify to take part.

The Madibaz will be aiming to move up from sixth overall in the Ussa tournament last year.

The public can see them in action daily on the South Campus indoor courts in Summerstrand, while the North Campus courts will be the venue for Pool B and C fixtures.
