Top jockeys to do battle in Bay

LAST weekend we saw some wonderful racing, but have no fear, it could be more of the same today at Fairview in Port Elizabeth and tomorrow at Clairwood, Durban.

It was drama at Fairview last week, with some sort of fairytale for trainer Tara Laing. Her stable won both feature races.

What made the victories even sweeter for Laing and her team was that she scratched all her runners in the two meetings before last Friday's action. Some of her horses were diagnosed with a blood disorder, but it is great to see the stable back at full speed.

The following day in Durban we saw a brilliant win by the exciting Legislate in the Daily News 2000. The winner of the Triple Crown in Gauteng, Louis the King, was beaten into third position and the Legislate team was quick to embark on a promotional roller-coaster. Louis the King was named the people's horse and all sorts of things in Gauteng, but Legislate fans hit back with the slogan, "A King is born".

This rivalry can only be good for the game building up to the Vodacom Durban July, as long as it does not get out of hand.

It is indeed a great time for punters as they look to find the July winner, and with the stables in contention for the season's awards pulling out all the stops.

Racing fans can look forward to an exciting battle among the country's top jockeys at Fairview today. S'mango Khumalo, Richard Fourie and Muzi Yeni will be giving it their all for more winners.

Khumalo is the favourite for the national title but Fourie has not thrown in the towel yet. Fourie and Yeni are also still in battle for the East Cape title. I just hope Yeni can fully concentrate on his racing as he was quite upset about losing his expensive cellphone temporarily last Friday. This is going to be great, hold the phone!
