PE team still in race for league victory

THE Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe soccer league title race looks set to go down to the wire with Port Elizabeth's Highbury preparing to fight to the last match.

Mathematically, Highbury have a strong chance of clinching the silverware but they will only have a chance of achieving this feat if they win their three remaining matches.

Highbury coach Garth Dickinson is well aware of this.

"We will continue to put up a brave fight in our remaining games. Let's hope and pray that the top two teams, current log-leaders FC Buffalo and second placed Angavu Stars, drop some points because any bad results will go in our favour."

Highbury collected maximum points with their 1-0 win over a spirited Cacadu United in Alexandria at the weekend .

Highbury are now in third position on the log table sharing 57 points from 26 games with second-placed Stars but the Queenstown outfit lead on goal difference.

Both teams still have a game in hand while the East London-based side FC Buffalo is leading the pack with 58 points from 27 games.

"The three points we secured against our neighbours Cacadu United are very important for us. It is now important to continue winning. We have forgotten about the game against United and are now focusing on our next game."

Highbury will play Matta Milan (away), Kokstad Liverpool (home) and Cloud 9 (away) in their remaining matches.

The all-important goal for Highbury was scored by the speedy Andile Njokweni in the 39th minute.

Meanwhile, Morning Stars drew 2-2 with bottom of the log Red Stars at Zwide Stadium on Saturday.

Another Port Elizabeth side, Real City were defeated 3-0 by Kokstad Liverpool. - Mthetho Ndoni
