Chess stars to make the moves

TOP international chess players will battle it out for the Eastern Cape Chess Open title at Sydenham Primary School in Port Elizabeth this weekend.

Gelvandale's Freddy Odendaal might have to defend his title against Ugandan Elijah Emojong or Zambian Kela Siame.

The 33-year-old Odendaal said despite his opponents' rankings, he was well prepared for the competition that starts today and ends tomorrow.

"The trick is to prepare yourself like you would for a big match in any other sport – and not to underestimate your opponent."

But the 21-year-old Emojong believes his physical fitness gives him an edge over the rest.

"You have to be physically fit so that you are mentally fit," he said.
