Top teams set cracking pace

THE NMMU A team and Aryan C are setting the pace in the Nelson Mandela Bay table tennis leagues after the completion of the first round.

NMMU's side of Kurt Adams, Dipal Bhana, Pranev Naidu and Thembelani Magodla head the premier league, while Aryan C are top of the first league.

Despite losing 9-2, Callies A put up a good fight against Aryan A in the start of the premier league second round this week.

They proved tough opponents even though Michael de Kock and Ridaa Hendricks won all their matches.

The most closely contested match of the evening was between Ivan Peter and Aryan B, with Ivan Peter winning 7-4.

Monde Cola (Ivan Peter) led from the front, winning all his matches, with a close 11-7 6-11 11-9 result over Shahied Abrahams.

In the first league fixtures, NMMU D were outplayed by Aryan C, with Zeenal Bhana and Younus Choonara winning all their singles matches for a 9-2 result. Bhana (Aryan C) had an exciting clash against Hishaan Bhana, edging him 11-5 9-11 11-7.

The other exciting match was between Callies B and Despatch, which Callies won 9-2. Sureshan Norman and Kanen Vandayar were solid for Callies B, winning all their matches.

In the remaining encounter, NMMU C defeated Livvie Alumni B 11-0.

  • The Nelson Mandela Bay trials at the weekend proved to be competitive, with Dipal Bhana clinching the number one spot.
He will again represent the metro at the provincial trials to be held on May 24 at the Malabar Community Centre.

Other players who made the top four were Kurt Adams, Michael de Kock and Devon Langford.
