GREG La Mude will be aiming to add to a hat-trick of victories when the Joe Davis Locksmiths Crusaders Challenge takes place next weekend (Friday to Sunday).
Back in Port Elizabeth after a three-year stint coaching in the United States, La Mude has wasted little time installing himself as a local favourite in EP tournaments.
The former SA player heads the log-leading Londt Park B team in the men’s first league and while playing at the top level is no longer his top priority, he will still take some beating.
His path may have been made a little easier by the absence of two-times champion Jason le Roux, the winner in 2012 and 2013, who has family commitments in East London.
La Mude won the tournament from 2008 to 2010 before heading overseas for another coaching stint.
The tournament provides a final chance for aspiring provincial players to convince the selectors of their potential as the squads for the Jarvis and Kaplan Cups are due to be announced at the conclusion of the event.
Entries close on Tuesday and the event will cater for top-16 sections in the men’s and women’s categories.
There will be further divisions for lower league players. – Neale Emslie
