Aloes cut down in national event

THE Jaguars (Gauteng North) registered their second victory of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup when they beat the Eastern Cape Aloes 52-40 on day two at the University of Pretoria yesterday.

The match started slowly, with the teams trading goal for goal, and it was only in the second half that the Gauteng North side started to impose their authority.

Just three points ahead at half time, with the score on 24-21, they moved further ahead in the third quarter until they had achieved the crucial 10-goal advantage from which an opposing side can rarely recover.

The Jaguars’ defence was the difference between the sides. Their goal defence, Shadine van der Merwe, and goalkeeper Jancke Penning, named player of the match, managed to turn the ball around several times.

They were well supported by the centre court players, and the ball regularly made its way to the Jaguars’ end.

The Jaguars rotated their shooters, with the role of goal shooter and goal attack being shared among Melissa Myburgh, Lenize Potgieter and Yolande du Preez.

The Aloes also made use of three shooters, using Zandile Njeza, Dumisane Chauke and Eileen van Zyl.

They achieved greater accuracy in their attempts on goal, but they needed to have the ball in their circle more often.

For the Aloes, it was a second disappointing loss, after they went down by four goals to the Golden Fireballs (Gauteng) on Saturday.
