Bay athletes in fine form at nationals

Grey Junior School pupil Lithathi Nqebe won a gold medal in the under-12 long jump while Hombakazi Primary School pupils Xhantilomzi Mkhavo, 10, and Buhlebenkosi Selana, 11, earned silver in the U10 1 200m and bronze in the U11 1 200m event respectively.

Ayanda Khondlo, 12, was beaten in the girls’ U12 long jump and Odwa Makuleni, 11, came behind in the U11 1 200m event, but they came home with certificates.

Hombakazi Primary’s athletics coach, Sibusiso Tu, was delighted with the achievement of his athletes.

“I knew it would be hard for them at the national event but they surprised us all by fighting for the top positions. “. . . They made me proud.” He said though the other two pupils had not won, he had no doubt they would do better next time.
