Province wreak havoc in Cup

RAYN Smid scored a hat-trick of tries as DHL Western Province thrashed the EP Kings 56-22 (half time 27-10) in their Vodacom Cup South Section match at City Park in Cape Town on Saturday.

The hosts were full value for their win as they ran in eight tries, with the visitors managing just three tries in return.

The win was a welcome return to form for Western Province who were coming off a 25-7 loss at the hands of the Sharks XV.

The home side were soon into their stride with eighthman Smid dotting down as early as they seventh minute.

EP struck back just four minutes later when right wing Michael Killian strode over for a converted try.

But Smid was proving to be something of a handful for the visitors and he grabbed his second try in the 15th minute.

WP flyhalf Gary van Aswegan and his opposite number, Ntabeni Dukisa, then traded penalties before the hosts took control of the contest with a try from right wing JP Lewis while Smid wrapped up his hat-trick with a try in the 35th minute.

EP began the second half well as replacement wing Selvyn Davids scored a try just one minute after the restart.

But the score seemed to invigorate the home team who went on a scoring blitz as they added tries from flanks Sikhumbuszo Notshe and Rohan Kitshoff, replacement Kyle Lombard and left wing Devon Williams.

Lock Kuhle Sonkosi scored a consolation try for the visitors.
