Excellent week for EP bowls

EASTERN Province Bowls enjoyed one of their most successful interdistrict tournaments last week, with the open women's team sharing the gold medal with Natal Inland in Bloemfontein. Unfortunately the weather had the last say as the final game had to be abandoned after only three ends. A deluge flooded the green and no further play was possible which meant the points were shared. EP led their section from day one and although they lost to Western Province in sectional play, the overall solid performances of the fours teams, skipped by Barbara Coetzee and Karen Korkie, saw them heading their sections, coming up against the other sectional winners. The last time EP women won the open section was in 1996. The remaining team members were Diane Ahrens, Annette Herselman and Lourenza van der Merwe (with Coetzee), and Sandy Smart, Desi Rosenblatt and Dalena Muller (with Korkie). The open men also enjoyed a successful tournament, returning home with the bronze medal after ending runners- up to Boland in their section. Boland had to share the gold medal with Johannesburg Bowls as a result of the weather. In East London, the EP women's team took the silver medal when they ended runners-up to Boland in the B tournament.
