VP high jumper reaches new heights

VICTORIA Park athlete Reece Brower confirmed his position as the best junior high jumper in the province when he took the Eastern Cape High Schools title for the third straight year in Cradock at the weekend.

The talented jumper has won every high schools competition he has entered this year, including the EP championships title, and has qualified to represent EP at the ASA junior championships in Stellenbosch in two weeks' time. His personal best height of 1.94m is not only a school record, but is the qualifying height for under-19 men to compete at the ASA champs.

Several other VP athletes shone at the Cradock event, with sprinter Cayla Seddon picking up a silver medal in the 100m, equalling her best time of 12.50sec.

This season she has excelled in the 100m hurdles and, after substituting the long jump with 100m, she broke school records in the 100m, 200m and 400m events.

She also achieved a new personal best time in the 200m of 25.3 and smashed her old personal best of 14.20 in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.02.

She has also qualified to represent EP in the ASA junior championships.

VP athletes who picked up bronze medals in Cradock were Daniel Wensley (U17 high jump), Xabiso Menze (400m) and Luke Meyer (U19 shot put).

Young sprinter Rafeeq Agherdien finished third in his U14 100m heat in Cradock and then came fourth in the final.
