Down to the wire as three vie for title

WHILE the rest of the teams in the Safa-NMB SAB league jostle for the crumbs, the three title contenders will be going toe to toe for the championship.

Just one point separates the top three teams, with the next team 20 points further back.

Subs, who led the race for most of the season, regained the lead on Saturday when Callies slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Island City.

Subs thrashed Sunrise Development 3-0 to go top on goal difference.

Tomorrow Subs play struggling Showvillage United at the NU2 Stadium. In the first round the log-leaders scored an easy 3-0 win. On current form they should score another easy win.

Callies have a difficult away match against Despatch Pioneers at the Khayamnandi field in Despatch. In the first round Callies won 4-3 at the Westbourne Oval. Anything less than maximum points could see them out of the race.

Lion City, who are a point behind the log-leaders, must be the team to beat for the league title. In their last three matches the Motherwell outfit have scored 14 goals with just two against. Tomorrow they play Island City at the Uitenhage Central Field. Island are a difficult proposition on their home turf. Last week they probably ended Callies' hopes of winning the championship when they beat the Londt Park outfit 1-0. However on current form Lion should come away with maximum points. They won 1-0 in the first round.

Hotspurs, the best of the also-rans and 20 points behind the three frontrunners, play Highland Spurs at the Jabavu Stadium in KwaNobhule. They won 3-1 in the first round.

Fixtures: Tomorrow Stars v Peace United (NU9), Central Acemates v Fairview Rovers (Westbourne Oval), Royal Bucks v Camper United (NU9), Motherwell Academy v Sunrise Development (Morningside), Despatch Pioneers v Callies (Khayamnandi), Subs v Showvillage United (NU2), Island City v Lion City (Uitenhage Central), Highland Spurs v Hotspurs (Jabavu).
