Records fall as swimming brothers shine at Muir gala

LED by top EP swimmers Alaric and Alard Basson, a series of new marks were set when Muir College held their annual gala last month.

Several interhouse records, one of which had stood since 1987, were bettered during the event.

Alaric, who held the record for both the 200m and 100m breaststroke events, bettered both his times this year.

In the 200m breaststroke he improved his time of two minutes, 28.96 seconds with a time of 2:25.25.

He also improved his 100m breaststroke record of 1:11.54 with a time of 1:08.31.

His brother, Alard, created a new time for the 100m butterfly as there was no existing record with his swim of 56.78.

He has set a benchmark time that will be hard to beat.

He also bettered his own record in the 50m butterfly of 27.37 with a mark of 26.71, and in the 50m freestyle, he broke his 2013 record of 27.87 with a time of 25.81.

The Sutherland relay team of Alard and Alaric Basson, Nizaam Kafaar and Jason Muller set a new mark in the 4x50m medley relay of 2:07.17.

They then broke the 1987 4x50m freestyle relay record of 1:55.46 with a fast time of 1:50.50.
