Callies manage to hang on to Safa-NMB league lead

CALLIES retained their position at the top of the Safa-NMB SAB soccer league with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Showvillage United at the Zwide Stadium on Saturday. Diego Burgins latched on to a cross to the far post by Damien Hufkie midway in the first half to score the only goal of the match.

Although the log-leaders held the upper hand, both teams squandered several chances.

Subs remain in second place following their 2-1 victory over Central Acemates. A penalty by Xolelani Mkiva saw the Motherwell outfit go ahead 1-0. Not long afterwards, Lizo Mahala made the halftime score 2-0. Acemates reduced the deficit after the break but failed to get the equaliser.

A brilliant header by one of the leading goalscorers in the league, Bongani Maseti, gave Lion City the lead in their match against Sunrise Development.

A thunderous volley by defender Thamsanqa Gawbeni made the halftime score 2-0.

After the break, Sunrise pulled one back from the penalty spot.

Anathi Katangana made the final score 3-1 to leave City trailing the logleaders by three points and Subs by two.

Island City climbed six places up the league table, from 12th to eighth, when they beat Peace United 2-1 at Walmer High. Island led 1-0 at halftime with a goal by Niven Ness in the 15th minute.

Peace got back on level terms immediately after the changeover. Ness then scored his second goal to give Island maximum points.

Royal Bucks also made a significant gain on the log with a 3-1 win over Despatch Pioneers. They climbed from 11th to seventh.

After a string of poor results, Motherwell Academy scored an impressive 3-1 win over Tomorrow Stars.

However, the three points were not enough to lift them off the bottom of the log.

Sixolile Ndamase gave Academy a 1-0 lead at the break. In the second half Nathi Kota struck twice to put them 3-0 ahead. Stars scored a consolation goal in the last quarter of the match.

The match between Fairview Rovers and Highland Spurs was postponed because of a funeral in the Rovers camp.

The results were:

Motherwell Academy 3 Tomorrow Stars 1, Royal Bucks 3 Despatch Pioneers 1, Central Acemates 1 Subs 2, Peace United 1 Island City 2, Camper United 1 Hotspurs 2, Sunrise Development 1 Lion City 3, Callies 1 Showvillage United 0, Fairview Rovers v Highland Spurs (postponed)
