Kingswood qualify for national squash event

KINGSWOOD set themselves up for a spot in the SA Top Schools boys' squash tournament this year after ending on top in the Dave Hodgson Festival at St Andrew's in Grahamstown at the weekend.

The team earned the right to represent the Eastern Cape at the national event by defeating Grey High, while the Kingswood girls' side are also in line for Top Schools, but must face Collegiate in a play-off.

Their match at the weekend ended in a 3-3 tie and a further encounter must be played to decide the Top Schools qualifiers.

The Collegiate team of Hayley Ward, Orpa de Klerk, Tayla O'Brien, Nicky Butters, Donna-Mae Russel and Daniel Shone kept themselves in the hunt, defeating DSG first and second teams, and Clarendon before the tie with Kingswood.

Shone excelled by winning all her matches.

  • These results follow some good performances by Grey and Kingswood in the FNB Invitational hosted by St Andrew's School in Bloemfontein the previous weekend.
Grey ended the tournament unbeaten after a gruelling weekend of squash, while the school were also invited to send a B team.

This team won two of their five matches, but were not disgraced in any of their three losses.

Kingswood, who have produced some outstanding players in recent years, made a slow start when they lost to Pretoria Boys High in their first match. But they won their remaining four matches, losing only three individual encounters in the process.

In the latest national junior rankings, Kingswood have three players in the top 10 – Daine Kruger (sixth in boys U16), Hannah Knott-Craig and Aimee-Leigh Pote (joint-10th in the girls U16).
