Master lifesavers in action

POLLOK Beach in Port Elizabeth will be a hive of activity tomorrow when the Eastern Cape Masters Provincial Lifesaving Championships take place. The annual competition will be hosted by Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club and caters for competitors from the age of 30 and older. Lifeguards from all the clubs along the Eastern Cape coastline will compete for titles. The events include flags, surf swim, double ski, beach sprints, taplin, beach relay, single ski, iron man and beach run. "The sport of surf lifesaving allows competitors to pursue a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives, even after retiring from beach patrols," spokeswoman Rose von Wildemaan said. "These master surf lifesavers have spent thousands of hours on volunteer patrol keeping our beaches safe," she said. Since the inception of the organisation, about 100000 lives have been saved.
