Christensen stars at Majola Week

MATTHEW Christensen, of Western Province, was named captain of the South Africa Schools cricket side at the closing function of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Pretoria at the weekend.

He was also named the Cricketer of the Week.

Christensen captained his side to two wins out of five, losing only against Gauteng on Sunday at St Alban's College, while one match was drawn and another ended with no result because of rain.

Some of his scores included 80, 78 and 74 in various formats.

In the week's main match on the final day, Ryan Rickleton showed why he deserved his place in the SA Schools side. He was again the standout batsman for Gauteng, scoring 56 runs in spite of Emmanuel Sebareme's 4/54 to lead his side to a four-wicket victory against WP. They posted 173/6 in their allotted 50 overs.

WP's response was not enough.

Dayyaan Galiem was the top scorer with 37 and even the 35 runs in extras could not help his side over the line, thanks to the aggressive bowling of Linaldo Phillips (3/18) and Nicholas Scholtz (2/8).

The awards were:

Batsman of the week: Ryan Rickeleton (St Stithian's, Gauteng); bowler of the week: Stefan Klopper (Centurion, Northerns); fielder of the week: Evan Jones (Waterkloof, Northerns); hero of the week: Dayyaan Galiem (Rondebosch, WP); cricketer of the week: Matthew Christensen (Rondebosch, WP)
