New Brighton youth takes judo silver at international

NELSON Mandela Bay judoka Babalo Magqabi turned his dream into a reality by winning a silver medal at the Region 5 Games in Zimbabwe this week.

Magqabi, 19, did his home town proud after narrowly missing out on the gold medal when he was edged by Gavin Mogopa, of Botswana, in the one-day tournament on Monday.

"I am so proud to have represented my country for the first time," Magqabi said. "I am really honoured. I hope I get another opportunity to represent my country."

Magqabi took up judo in 2003 after watching his uncle, Mzimtisi Magqabi, now his coach, train with children in New Brighton.   - Amir Chetty
