Old rivals to do battle in Glendore Sprint

ALL is set for another exciting racing weekend, starting with nine races on the Fairview grass track today.

Last Saturday it was Johannesburg that took the limelight, but tomorrow it will be Cape Town with 10 races at Kenilworth.

Today's main race is the Glendore Sprint, a race steeped in history. The legendary Port Elizabeth sprinter Heat The Drums won this race in 2010 and 2011. The race was then still at the Arlington track, which is not in use anymore.

If we get a race close to last year's Glendore Sprint, we are in for a humdinger.

Insearchofthesun won it in a huge battle with Blackmalkin. The stipes took a long, hard look at the closing stages of the race, before awarding it to the delighted stable of trainer Steven Janse van Rensburg.

Both of these horses are back to do battle again, but all eyes will be on the Cape Town raider of trainer Vaughan Marshall, Olympian. After consecutive wins in Cape Town and carrying a light weight, Olympian could be a banker bet.

It looks like Marshall's Cape Town stable is targeting Fairview for some holiday money. Marshall won last Friday's November Stakes with Chestnut's Rocket in an exciting battle with Ottimo.

Also keep an eye on his other runners on the card, Flying Welshman (race 1) and Three Blue Cranes (race 6). They also look hard to beat.

At Kenilworth the Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas for three- year-old fillies is the headliner.

Marshall will be involved with Jet Set Go, the winner of the Champion Juvenile Cup earlier this year at Fairview.

Majmu and Cold As Ice are dominating the betting though. They should fight it out in a race not to be missed.

It is good to see the Cape Town Summer of Champions picking up the pace. Johannesburg staged a fine Summer Cup meeting last Saturday but the vibe just can't match the big days in Cape Town, like the Queen's Plate or the J & B Met (or PE's Algoa Cup for that matter!).
