EP bag six of the best in top masters event

JACQUI Ryder became a double champion as Eastern Province players picked up a total of six sectional titles when the SA Masters Doubles Squash Championships took place in Port Elizabeth

The annual tournament, played from Thursday to Saturday, attracted a big entry of 405 players from around the country, divided into men's (21 sections), women's (12 sections) and mixed doubles (25 sections). The players were divided into sections according to strength.

The host province had the most success in the mixed event where Ryder teamed up with her husband Peter to beat EP colleagues Greg La Mude and Anlen Murray to the title in the top section.

Other success came from Marcus Oshry and Cindy Playdon in section eight, and Jono Terblanche and Rae Luckman in section 22.

There were also five runner-up spots for EP in the mixed doubles.

EP's top player La Mude also featured in the men's doubles, but again had to settle for the runner-up spot, in tandem with Oshry.

The only men's winners came from brothers Brent and Scotty Keevy in section five, while Brendan O'Grady and Andre du Toit were runners-up in section two.

EP did well in the top women's sections. Besides Ryder partnering Murray to the national title, Karen Schepers and Lisa O'Grady were the winners of section two. - Neale Emslie
