Callies tipped as pack falters

THE smart money will be on Bloom Callies to lift the Nafa Premier League Cup soccer title for the first time as the chasing pack faltered at the weekend.

Callies extended their lead to nine points when they ended Fairview Rovers' five-match winning streak at Finnis 1 on Saturday.

The log-leaders won 2-1.

Champions Glenville Celtic, who were second going into the weekend, lost 3-2 to Park United. They are now joined by Blackpool and Hotspurs in a three-way tie.

Hotspurs made the best gain when they beat Saints 1-0 to leap-frog from sixth to second.

Blackpool could have made second spot their own but for a dubious penalty decision in the second half. They led 1-0 at the break with a goal by Zachary Jackson.

After the break, Westlake converted a penalty to share the points.

At the bottom of the log, the position remains unchanged as the three teams facing relegation lost their matches.

Fairdene probably saw their league hopes dashed when the lost 2-1 to Helenvale.

After tailenders Saints lost to Hotspurs on Friday evening, Chatty United – who are just a point above them – lost 2-1 to Ebenezer.

Shamrocks failed to use homeground advantage and lost 1-0 to Wolves.
