J-Bay surfing contest delayed by poor conditions

THE J-Bay Open surfing competition has been put on hold until tomorrow.

Weather forecasters believe better surfing conditions can be expected later in the week.

Association of Surfing Professionals Africa spokesman Paul Botha says an estimated six hours of surfing is needed before a winner of the championship can be announced.

The event is the sixth stop on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour.

Botha says surfing conditions are expected to be the best at the weekend.

"We are constantly checking the conditions and due to only about six hours of surfing needed before the end of the J-Bay Open we decided to hold out for the better surf conditions," he said.

Botha said only 12 surfers were left fighting for the J-Bay Open title.

The competition forms part of the J-Bay Winterfest. – Gareth Wilson
