EP singles success story for PE club

THE Eastern Province singles which concluded recently were a resounding success for PE Bowling Club.

The club won the gold, silver and bronze medals in the men's open, with Peter Hufkie beating Evan Kent in the final and Terry Cawood finishing third.

Bobby Hughes prevented Phil Slaughter (Walmer) from retaining the title he won last year to win gold in the senior men's division, and Sean Brito won silver in the junior section, losing to Gerhard Bergh (PE Moth) in the final.

Lourenza van der Merwe (Western Suburbs) beat Moyra Buchanan (Uitenhage) in the women's open and Pat Cullen (Victoria Park) saw off a determined challenge from Elsa Grobler (J-Bay) to win the junior title. In an all-Western Suburbs senior final, Lolly Reed beat Wilma McLachlin to round off a solid women's singles event for their club.

This weekend sees the commencement of the EP fours at various venues around town. There are six men's sections but only three women's sections which means that even two sectional runners-up will qualify for the finals mid-month.
