Fairdene on right path to Cup glory

AFTER knocking Blackpool off the top of the Nefa Premier League table on Saturday, Fairdene scored the biggest win in the first round proper of the Mala Moodaley Knockout Cup on Sunday when they thrashed Apex 7-0 at the Finnis Road field.

The newly-promoted team are certainly the one to beat in the competition.

After making their debut with a 7-2 win Chatty United, Fairdene have remained among the frontrunners. Last week, they beat Hotspurs in a league match to topple them from the top of the table.

Fairview Rovers supporters could say justice prevailed when Glenville beat Hotspurs 1-0. Spurs were knocked out of the competition in the preliminary round by Rovers following a penalty shootout. However, they were controversially reinstated after Rovers were declared defaulters.

In true KO Cup tradition two matches ended in penalty shootouts.

Stardrift beat Swallows 5-4 after they were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. In terms of the rules, the match went straight into penalties.

In the second match to end in penalties, Ebenezer beat Bloom Callies 4-3 after being 2-2 at full time.

Blackool beat Westham 4-0 after Dwayne Williams converted a penalty to put them 1-0 ahead at the break. In the second half Logun Freeeman, Zachery Jackson and Nathan Jones completed the rout.

Wolves thrashed Chatty United 5-1 to set up a quarterfinal clash with Glenville in a repeat of Saturday's league match which Glenville won 2-1.

The match between Lads and Park United was not played because of a dispute involving Saints.

The quarterfinals will be played in September.
