Champs defend vets' cup

EVERGREENS successfully defended the Veterans' Football Tournament Cup played at the Callies club in Londt Park over the weekend

The 10th edition, which was played in the city for the first time last year, attracted teams from all over the country. It was previously held in George.

With uneven numbers, organisers decided to play the tournament as a league format with one full round of fixtures, with the team with the highest number of points declared the winners

Right from the start on Friday evening Evergreens from Cape Town always looked like the team to beat. They won this event for the first time last year after coming close in previous years.

They beat PE All Stars 4-0 in their opening game, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament and finished as the only unbeaten team with six wins and two draws, conceding just two goals.

Leon Rossouw from Evergreens won the top goal-scorer award with 11 goals while Ismail Seedat (Florida) was voted player of the tournament.

Final placing:  Evergreens (Cape Town) 25, Florida Albion (Joburg) 19, PE All Stars 18, Logivent Callies (PE) 16, Boksburg FC (Joburg) 13, ACPP (Pretoria) 12, Bothasig (Cape Town) 11, Rygersdal (Cape Town) 9, MBSA Masters (East London) 8.

The All Stars team selected at the end of the tournament was:

Brendon Persens (Logivent Callies), Jeremy Wyngaard (Evergreens), Stanley Sampson (Logivent Callies), Rodney Visagie (Evergreens), Rodney Jacobs (Florida Albion), Anthony Norkie, Ismail Seedat (Florida Albion), Jose de Sa (ACPP), Phila Ntshanyana, Mzwandile Hini, Mario Peterson (Evergreens). - Mogan Segadavan
