Bumper field for Wembley tourney

WEMBLEY Tennis Club are set for another bumper tournament next weekend, with the organisers, as of yesterday, just four players shy of their target of 78.

Last year, the second Wembley Men's Doubles tournament attracted a large entry of 72 and the event's popularity is clearly on the rise.

Today is the closing date for entries so anyone interested in playing should waste no time in contacting tournament organiser Gavin Cullen on 079-528-4444.

Because of the big entry, Wembley will be hosting the tournament at the PE Club next Saturday, starting at 8am.

The tournament is organised and sponsored to a large degree by the Tuesday Boys Tennis Club, a group of players who gather at Wembley each week for a few sets of social tennis.

The entry fee for the tournament is R75, but there is value for the amount because of the many and quality prizes on offer. "We once again have some serious prizes on offer and players will get more than fair value for their entry fee," Cullen said.

"Players are encouraged to bring their friends and families along as food and drinks will be available throughout the tournament."

Keith Davids and Benny Donley will be back to defend their title, but the size of the entry suggests there will be plenty of competition for the top prize.

Besides the A section, there will also be some serious rivalry in the lower divisions, with players being divided into different groups according to their strength.

Sections will be contested on a round-robin basis, with the pool winners playing in a final to decide the eventual overall winners. - Neale Emslie
