Racing focus will be on speed
IT is a weekend of speed in South African horse racing with sprint races topping the bill today at Fairview and also tomorrow at Scottsville in Pietermaritzburg. There is enough quality on display in the MR92 Handicap to make the trip to Fairview. But the focus of racing fans will be on the action at Scottsville where four Grade 1 races form part of the card. Most of the country's top sprinters will be there but the Port Elizabeth star, Copper Parade, will not be in action. He is taking a break and will hopefully run later in the KwaZulu-Natal Champions season. It is great to see that Copper Parade has been nominated for two awards at the Gauteng Feature Season awards. After winning the Computaform Sprint recently, the chances must be good that Yvette Bremner's charge will be crowned champion sprinter at this awards evening on Wednesday in Johannesburg. There will be no surprises later in the year when the East Cape horse of the year will be crowned. Copper Parade has that one in the bag already. We tipped you a nice little place accumulator last week, helped by two bankers from the Justin Snaith stable. We will be looking towards the same stable today to do us a favour with Land of Meadows in the eighth race. Talking about the Snaith stable, the PE trainers' title race has turned into a two- horse race. Defending champion Gavin Smith has got a lot of catching up to do and it looks like leader Alan Greeff or Snaith will be crowned champion at the end of July. It seems only two riders are in the hunt for the jockeys' title. Richard Fourie rode four winners last Friday to go past Muzi Yeni. Both will be in the city today and also on Monday when there is a meeting on the polytrack. No doubt they are serious about winning the title and their mounts will be worth following. With meetings today and Monday it is a hectic time for PE racing, but, as many readers have pointed out, we want more meetings on a Saturday or Sunday.
