Blind bowler buoyed ahead of Games

EASTERN Province's B2 blind bowler Gwen Nel, coached by Geoff Newcombe, has again struck gold by winning the singles title in her class at the recent national championships in KwaZulu-Natal.

The triumph will have Nel in a good frame of mind for the Commonwealth Games taking place in Scotland later this year.

Besides annexing the singles title, Nel teamed up with Port Elizabeth colleague Glen Emslie to take the silver medal in the pairs competition.

Newcombe said the results were the reward of some hard work done during training.

"This was also good preparation for the Commonwealth Games being held in Scotland in July and August this year," Newcombe said.

Nel and Newcombe have been included in the SA team to participate at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the singles.

Nel will then team up with Herman Scholtz, from Northern Gauteng, to compete in the pairs competition.

"We would like to thank PE and Westview Bowling Clubs for the opportunity to use their facilities for their training sessions," Newcombe said. "Also, a special word of thanks must go to Mark Chapman of Chapman Brothers for the great support they have given us."
