PE Comets fly high in final thriller

THE PE Comets men's team lived up to all expectations when they outplayed Gemineyez, of Zwide, in a thrilling final of the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association season opening tournament.

The match at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre in Motherwell started off with Gemineyez controlling the play as they comfortably scored their first two baskets of the game, while Comets were still struggling to settle down.

Towards the end of the first quarter, Comets gained the lead, and then continued to dominate, building up to a lead of 16 points in the third quarter.

Their captain Phumzile Panda was on fire at this stage, hitting four consecutive three-pointers.

Gemineyez came back in the fourth quarter, with Thobela Makwabe and Sizwe Madikwa tearing through the Comets defence to narrow their lead, but Comets held their nerve to clinch victory 90-88.

The PE Comets women's team also easily beat Gemineyez in their final.
