Shock defeat sees Callies drop to third

CALLIES have a mountain to climb to win the Safa-NMB SAB league soccer title after being held to a shock 2-2 draw by Tomorrow Stars, who are battling to avoid relegation.

The Londt Park outfit dropped to third place, two points behind Subs and a point behind Lion City, both of whom won their matches at the same venue later in the day.

Callies' next match is against City after the Easter break. They play Subs in their final fixture.

Cleavon Draai and Emmanuel Hendricks scored on either side of the break for Callies.

City showed once again why they consider themselves champions-in- waiting by beating highly ranked Camper United 3-0.

Free-kick specialist Akona Manqola put City ahead from outside the area early in the match. In the second half, City upped their game and could have completely demolished their opposition had they converted their chances.

Manqola was at it again when he set up City's second goal with an excellent run from within his own half. Mihlali Mkonto converted to make it 2-0.

Mayenzeke Sokunentsa made the final score 3-0.

In the third match of the day, Subs retained top spot with an easy 4-1 win over Royal Bucks after leading 1-0 at half-time.

After the break, Mahala Lizo, Ludwe Snjica and Masumpa Vuyisani added to the first-half strike by Bongani Bhalura.

Highland Spurs moved into fourth spot after beating Peace United, while northern areas rivals Hotspurs and Fairview Rovers shared the points with a goalless draw.

The teams at the bottom of the log showed that they are not going down without a fight.

Tailenders Sunrise Development drew 3-3 with Showvillage United, while Motherwell Academy beat Despatch Pioneers 3-0.

With three matches remaining, Sunrise and Motherwell could still avoid relegation if they win all three. - Mogan Segadavan
