Lion City roar past Pioneers

LION City scored a resounding 3-0 win over Despatch Pioneers to go to the top of the Safa-NMB SAB soccer league for the first time this season.

The new log-leaders never looked back after Siyasanga Ngetu opened the scoring on Saturday. Shortly before half-time, free kick specialist Akona Mangola made it 2-0 when he netted from well outside the area.

After the break, Siphesihle Bongo completed the rout.

City have now scored 17 goals in their last four matches and, with six matches remaining, must be the favourites to lift the trophy.

Although they cannot win the championship from their position, Hotspurs have toppled log-leaders for the second time this month.

Three weeks ago, they removed Callies from the top of the log when they held the Londt Park outfit to a goalless draw. This week they took care of Subs with a 1-1 result.

Callies' hopes of winning the league suffered another setback on Saturday when they played to a goalless draw with Royal Bucks despite being on top for long periods.

The league race is poised on a knife's edge, with City a point ahead of Subs and Callies, who are tied in second place.

Callies have a more difficult run-in as they have to play both City and Subs.

Results: Fairview Rovers 3 Tomorrow Stars 2, Camper United 2 Peace United 1, Callies 0 Royal Bucks 0, Lion City 3 Despatch Pioneers 0, Hotspurs 1 Subs 1, Highland Spurs 2 Island City 1. - Mogan Segadavan
