Crusaders, NMMU crowned
CRUSADERS women and NMMU men averted any final-night upsets to claim the Super League squash titles with decisive displays on the final night of competition on Tuesday.
Saders regained the women's title they won in 2012 by maintaining their five-point lead over closest rivals Londt Park A when they beat the Londt Park B side 19-5.
Although the final margin looks convincing, there were several interesting clashes as the Londt Park players fought hard to give their A team clubmates a chance of retaining the title.
Despite losing 3-0, young Kaylyn Trevarthen gave the more experienced Angela Fraser a hard time in the opening encounter, and then the No1s, Diane van Eck (Saders) and Cindy Levey, had a ding-dong battle before Van Eck's greater fitness gave her the edge 3-1.
Londt Park B No2 Kathy Hoy pushed Kate de Kock all the way before bowing to a 3-2 loss and those results were enough to give Saders the title.
Lisa O'Grady and Christine Walland wrapped it up for Saders with similar 3-1 victories.
In the men's section, NMMU made it a hat-trick of titles by defeating Old Grey 19-3, ending nine points ahead of Londt Park.
There was an interesting moment when Old Grey No1 Bonakele Nomkala led Jason le Roux 2-1, but the seasoned NMMU player underlined how relentless he can be to sweep through the last two games.
In the Goffer League, Crusaders bridged a 20-year gap when they defeated NMMU 3-2 in the final, having last won the title in 1994.
