East London to host Nipper event

NIPPERS around the Eastern Cape are gearing up for the annual Eastern Cape surf-lifesaving championships which will take place in East London this weekend.

More than 200 excited nippers aged eight to 14 from six clubs will descend on Nahoon Beach for the contest.

The Nipper Championships will be hosted by East London Surf Lifesaving Club and will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Clubs from East London, Bluewater Bay, King's Beach, Hobie Beach, Summerstrand and Plettenberg Bay will be competing.

Nippers will compete for titles in events such as the surf swim, body board, beach sprints, taplin, iron nipper, flags, beach relay, board and beach run.

The Eastern Cape event will help the nippers prepare for the national championships which will be held in Port Elizabeth next month at King's Beach.

Thanks to dedicated club administrators, coaches and parents, the nipper movement is one of the more successful youth development organisations in the country. Nippers are taught vital life skills, surf safety, general first aid and fitness together with gamesmanship.
