Sportsman Smith sorely missed

TRIBUTES have poured in for well known Port Elizabeth sportsman Trevor "Buks" Smith, who died of a suspected heart attack at the weekend.

Smith, 54, was a popular member of the Charlo Athletics Club, Gelvandale Cricket Club, Saints Football Club and the Westbourne Tigers Football Club.

He competed in numerous sporting events including the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons, The Herald Cycle Tour and numerous river miles.

Smith was found dead in his car in the parking area of a Summerstrand food outlet after he competed in the Bagshaw 10km race at Pollok Beach on Saturday.

Family friend Feizal Nichols described him as a loving father who excelled in sport. "We were all shocked by his sudden death ... he was a healthy sportsman."

Smith's aunt, Audrey Burton, said: "Trevor will be remembered for his friendliness, quick wit, stirring the pot, great story- telling and a good laugh."

Burton said although Smith was a very private person, he lived life to the fullest and had the knack of being able to strike up a conversation with anyone.

"He was blessed with many, many friends in all walks of life and he followed all sports closely and was a true Manchester United fan. He loved the outdoors.

"He was such a gentleman and everybody loved him ... we will sorely miss him." Smith is survived by his daughter, Simone, two sisters and a brother.

His funeral service is at Springdale Congregational Church in Parkside tomorrow at 11am.
