Contest now even tighter in Whisky league

THE Barclays Whisky league was turned on its head after last weekend's double round of matches.

What was already a tightly congested table now sees only four points separating the top six teams, with Mill Park occupying pole position.

However, with 21 points still to be contested and many of the contenders to play against each other, the race for the league title remains wide open.

The women's league, on the other hand, has developed into a one-horse race, with The Woods 9.5 points clear of PE, who are closely followed by Western Suburbs and Walmer. It would be a major surprise if The Woods do not successfully defend the title.

Leagues now take a break until the double-header on March 22-23. Until then, the EP mixed pairs finals will be contested and then the inter-district squads will compete in their respective tournaments.

There are no obvious favourites for the mixed pairs in Port Alfred this weekend.

The young pairing of Jorge Rodrigues and Desi Rosenblatt will get stern opposition from the experienced Hennie Slabbert and Dalena Muller in section one, while Paul Spriggs and Sandy Smart will have to see off the challenge of Christo Rens and Helena Gardiner to contest Sunday's final.
