Kruisfontein run rampant with 10 tries
KRUISFONTEIN ran in 10 tries to claim an emphatic 62-17 victory against Buffalos in their Eastern Cape Super 12 club rugby encounter at the Humansdorp Country Club at the weekend.
The group-A clash got off to a flying start, with Kruisfontein stamping their authority early in the game with an excellent display of rugby. Once the hosts got on to the scoring sheet, there was no stopping them and they went to the break leading 40-3 after scoring six tries.
Happy with the healthy lead, they made several changes to give other players a run and they did not disappoint, scoring a further four tries to finish off the visitors who were totally outclassed.
In Zwide, African Bombers ran in five tries against Cambridge to register their first win of the season.
Bombers went into the encounter like wounded lions and dominated from kick-off in a one- sided clash. The bonus point victory will go a long way in giving the side confidence after they started their campaign on a bad note.
They made their intentions known early in the game and led 19-0 after 40 minutes. They continued pushing for points in the second half and were rewarded as they increased their lead, winning the match 35-7.
In group B, Progress had to dig deep for their narrow 21-19 win over East London Police at Police Park in Cambridge.
The game lived up to expectations as both sides came out guns blazing and attacked from the first whistle. Few chances were created in the first half but it was last season's finalists who led 7-5 at the break.
With both sides having scored a try apiece in the first half, the men in blue, who finished third last season, scored a further two to Progress's one. But the Uitenhage side proved that games are won not only by tries as they slotted three penalties to take the honours.
Champions Harlequins edged Winter Rose 16-9 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.
The northern areas outfit made seven changes to the team that beat Caltex Crusaders the previous weekend, and those given an opportunity to play repaid their coach's confidence with a hard-fought victory. They led 8-3 at halftime.
Quins could have won by a bigger margin, but several basic errors cost them in what should have been a walk in the park for the experienced side. However, a further unconverted try and a penalty in the second half were enough to claim the points.
