Strong turnout for Kowie River Mile

A BUMPER field of almost 350 participants took to the waters in windy conditions for the second annual Spar Kowie River Mile in Port Alfred yesterday afternoon.

The open-water event, with its lineup of five races, raised R30000 for the Sunshine Coast Hospice, which provides home- based care for terminally ill residents of the Ndlambe municipal area.

The feature race in the 14 to 29 age category saw a convincing win by Edward Johannisen, 18, of East London, in a time of 16:47.

Port Elizabeth-based Dylan Smith, 15, finished a distant second in 17:22, followed by Craig Emslie, 18, of Wellington, in 17:53.

Capetonian Jessica Ashley- Cooper (21) took the women’s title in 17:39, just six seconds clear of PE’s Jessica Canter, 14, in 17:45, with fellow Port Elizabethan Tarryn Els, 16, third in 17:49.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s Miles Rosser, 41, took the win in the 30-plus category in 19:52, while his Aquabear Swimming Club teammate Tracy Gous, 37, claimed victory in the women’s race in 20:09.
