EP gymnasts take on African rivals in Zim

SEVEN Eastern Province gymnasts will take part at the two-day Southern African Championships in Harare, Zimbabwe, starting today.

The group joined other gymnasts from all nine provinces to represent the country at the championships, which will also feature Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zambia, Swaziland and the hosts, Zimbabwe.

The South African team was selected during the national championships in Pretoria in September.

The EP group comprises Monique Slabbert, Tanika Angileri, Asthi Nama, Pascale Potgieter, Onke Mangele, Madale Swanepoel and Taylor du Plessis.

The gymnasts, who are from various clubs in the metro and surrounding areas, will compete in aerobics, trampoline, tumbling, artistic and rhythmic.

Du Plessis, a senior member of the team, will compete in both tumbling and euro-trampoline, while Potgieter will be involved in both euro-trampoline and double mini-trampoline.

Slabbert will compete in rhythmic gymnastics and the rest of the team members will only take part in the euro-trampoline. The team is expected back in the country on Saturday.
