THE annual Premier Games organised by the provincial department of sport, recreation, arts and culture officially started at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide yesterday.
The two-day event was launched last year by the department to develop sport in the Eastern Cape. All eight provincial districts, Nelson Mandela Bay, Amathole, Chris Hani, Buffalo City, Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo, Joe Gqabi and Cacadu, are represented by teams that will participate in soccer, rugby and netball.
Department spokeswoman Malehlohonolo Mlabateki said the tournament was established to assist the various sporting federations to identify talent.
“The event has been very successful so far and we have an exchange programme with the Lower Saxony soccer team in Germany.
“We’ve invited representatives from Safa to assist us select an under-18 team that will represent the province in Germany next year as part of our exchange programme.”
She said all the finals would be played at the stadium today.
