NMMU, Comet cock-a-hoop in basketball event

THE NMMU men’s team and Comets women emerged yesterday as the champions when the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association held its final tournament of the year at the indoor centre on the university’s Missionvale campus.

Comets beat Gemineyez 40-21 in the women’s final, while NMMU had the edge against Gemineyez 1 in the men’s final, getting home 83-50.

Comets got off to a good start and they held that advantage throughout the match for a deserving victory.

Zanele Mcipa, of Comets, was named the most valuable player in the women’s section.

The men’s final was watched by a big crowd and it was a well contested encounter.

NMMU had to work hard for their victory and Geminyez never gave up.

However, the varsity team were good enough to maintain their advantage, with the most valuable player award going to NMMU’s Busta Moya.

The association’s chairwoman, Dumisani Chauke, said their final tournament of the year had been a big success.

“Yes, the tournament went off very well and there were some good matches, and it was a well-attended final,” Chauke said.

“We also had a schools tournament on Saturday and that also was a success.”
