THE Wembley Tennis Club in Port Elizabeth have been hard at work this year putting themselves back on the map and recently hosted a tournament to celebrate their refurbished facilities.
With the aim of attracting new members, the Mill Park club have completed phase two of the upgrade of their courts. The club now boast four courts that have been completely resurfaced, with new fencing installed.
Earlier this year, Wembley held their annual tournament, which has become a big event on the EP calendar, catering for players of all standards.
The tournament has grown so much that they had to use PE Club to host it because of their greater number of courts.
Wembley project manager and member Gavin Cullen said the project had been possible due to the input of funds from the members, from Grey High School, who use the club facilities, and the National Lotteries Board.
“To celebrate the upgraded facilities, the Tuesday Boys Tennis Club hosted a closed tournament with a spit braai,” Cullen said.
“The tournament attracted 19 of our 26 members and took the form of a round-robin, playing four games with one’s partner and four games against. Rodney Dold Chapman was victor of the day.”
