CITY Lads are through to the quarterfinals of the Sasol Women’s League national tournament after humiliating Mpumalanga Ladies 5-2 at the Alabama Stadium in Klerksdorp, North West, yesterday.
The Mpumalanga side were defeated twice in their Group C fixtures and were booted out of the competition after yesterday’s match.
Lads lost once while Durban Ladies won both their matches.
Lads had to win against the Mpumalanga side to stay in the tournament, and they did not disappoint their supporters.
The New Brighton-based outfit are appearing in the tournament for the third time.
Despite Lads dominating possession, Ladies opened the scoring via Ella Madonsela.
Lads captain Lumka Mjana slotted home the equaliser moments before half time. Lads came back strongly after the break when they made their second substitution by introducing Yandiswa Ncocho in place of out-of-form striker Nwabisa Kolisi.
Ladies regained the lead in the 60th minute through a goal by Bongekile Ntuli, but Lads struck back quickly through Phakama Duru.
Andisiwe Ndesi registered Lads’ third goal and Duru added two more to make the final score 5-2.
This is the first time the Safa Eastern Cape Sasol Women’s league champions have reached the quarterfinals.
They were knocked out in the group stages in their two previous appearances in the competition.
Duru, who was named the Sasol Diski Queen of the match, said she was excited with the team’s performance.
“We improved a lot compared to our first game.
Lads coach Andile Mrwerwe was delighted.
“We did our homework. We studied Mpumalanga Ladies very carefully when they played [on Tuesday].”
Lads will play their quarterfinal against Limpopo side Mandies today at the Alabama Stadium.
The week-long tournament is being attended by Banyana Banyana coach Joseph Mkhonza and the SA under-17 and U20 coach Sheryl Botes.
