PORT Elizabeth cyclist Anriette Schoeman (Mecer Africa Silks) was back on the podium this weekend when she stormed to victory in the 60km second leg of the FNB Amazing Race Mountain Bike Challenge at Hopewell Trails near PE.
The men’s race was won by Grant MacGeoghegan (Cyclo Pro), who dominated from the start.
MacGeoghegan caused quite an upset when he left top riders like Roger Pheiffer, Brent Pheiffer and Kevin Dorfling behind on the climbs.
Schoeman managed to finish in the top six overall (including men), continuing a record of top placings in recent events.
Both Schoeman and MacGeoghegan succeeded in building up a sizeable gap midway through the race.
Andrea von Holt (Merrill), who finished second in the first leg of the series, was second again. Schoeman, who finished third in the first leg of the series, is now tied with Von Holt as leader of the women’s series overall.
The next event in the series will take place in February at Hopewell.
Cindy-Lee Augustyn was the women’s winner in the 40km race, with Nicholas Friend the men’s winner.
