MORE than 200 pupils from primary schools in the northern areas took part in the first Athletics Revival meeting, held at the Gelvandale Track on Saturday.
The event, which waswell supported by parents and teachers, was organised by former officials and members of the EP Amateur Athletics Association.
Participating schools included Hillcrest, Rufane Donkin, Alpha, Fontein, Gelvan Park, Adolph Schauder and De Heuwel Primary.
“More schools would have participated but were afraid we were forming a breakaway group,” one of the organisers, Derrick Hoshe, said.
“This is far from the truth. We are concerned the sport is dying.
“Once the events are up and running, we expect the schools’ body to take over.”
Four more meetings are planned for January and February to prepare the pupils for the sectional and metro finals. – Mogan Segadavan
