EASTERN Province put in a bitterly disappointing performance and lost to Northerns by 142 runs in their CSA Provincial one-day cricket encounter at Grey High yesterday.
It was a woeful batting display by the home side.
Chasing 238, they were bundled out for 95 in 28.4 overs. They found it difficult to face huge paceman Ryan Cartwright, who bowled superbly, taking 5/23.
The only notable contributions for EP came from Attie Dyili (30), James Price (21) and Sisanda Magala (19).
Magala also bowled well and took all six wickets that fell in the Northerns innings of 237.
David Bunn played an invaluable innings of 55 off 118 balls to lay a solid foundation for Northerns.
Graeme van Buuren made 119 not out off 136 balls with seven fours and four sixes.
He and Bunn put on a patient 132 for the fourth wicket, before Shershan Naidoo joined the centurion to put on 56 off 46 balls. Naidoo made 35 off 26 balls.
Besides Magala, none of the other EP bowlers made an impact, bowling in short spells and lacking any rhythm. EP were also outclassed in the three-day encounter on Saturday, losing by 151 runs.
