Achilles to spread festive cheer with Run for Toys

ACHILLES Running Club members will introduce some early Christmas spirit next week when they hold their annual Achilles Run for Toys event, starting at Walmer Golf Club at 5.30pm on Thursday.

Although it will be marshalled in the normal fashion, the emphasis of the race is on fun and for participants to provide toys which will be distributed to those in need. There will be no medals or prizes.

The distance is 5km. All toys collected, which will serve as the entry fee, will be given to children at the Physically Disabled Association’s Day Care Centre in Motherwell and the Bethel Safe House, which cares for abused and abandoned babies.

Those entering are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items which will be donated to The Sanctuary – a block of 43 cottages for state pensioners based in Central and run by the PE Ladies’ Benevolent Society.

“We are urging all runners to join us to bring some Christmas joy into their lives by contributing to this Food for Joy initiative,” Achilles committee member Paulette McEwan said.

McEwan also encouraged anyone keen to enter to get into the Christmas spirit and to wear something red or “Christmassy”.

Achilles members will also shave or spray heads to raise funds for Cansa.

THE first 500 entrants in the Diabetes SA Global walk/run around the North End Lake tomorrow will get a T-shirt, goodie bag and a Pronutro breakfast.

Participants can also get a free Accu-chek blood glucose test before the event, which starts at 9am.

There are two distances – 4km and 8km – and the entry fee is R40. Children under 12 can enter free. Participants can bring their dogs provided they are on a leash. Entry fee for pets is R5. – Mogan Segadavan

THE 10km Two Views Challenge and 5km fun run, hosted by Charlo Athletic Club, start and end at the Italian Club in Harold Road, Charlo, tomorrow.

The entry fee is R30 for 10km and R20 for the 5km. There is a R20 temporary licence fee for the longer event.

Late entries will be taken at the Italian Club today (5pm-7pm) and tomorrow (5am-6.15am). The 10km race starts at 6.30pm and the fun run 15 minutes later. – Mogan Segadavan
