Golf festival gets new look

THE Hill’s Festival of Golf kicks off on Sunday, with the PE Golf Club yesterday unveiling a two-fold thrust in this year’s series of daily competitions, running to next Saturday.

Backed by main sponsors Maritime Motors, PEGC general manager Marinus Weiss said yesterday they had attempted to revamp the festival this year by targeting a wider PE audience, as well as aligning each day with a chosen beneficiary.

“The festival had been going for seven or eight years and it had lost a bit of its momentum,” Weiss, who took over at PEGC four months ago, said. “So I got together with the fund-raising committee and we decided for a new look this year.

“There have been two big changes this year in that there is an alignment with several charities, while we also want the festival to be available to the greater PE. Obviously, it is still for our members, but we also want the wider public to join us.”

Weiss said they had planned the week so companies could also use the facilities if they wished to host year-end functions. Besides the daily golf competitions and prizegiving, a 600m² marquee will be erected, which will cater for a three-course meal and a variety of entertainment each evening.

“We hope the golfers will use the chance for an evening meal and some fun, while companies could also use the occasion for year-end functions, even if they are not involved in the golf days,” Weiss said.

He said one of the major attractions from a golfing point of view would be trick-shot artist Michael Scholz, who will perform his show at 6pm on Tuesday.

A former professional golfer who played on the Sunshine Circuit in the 1990s, Scholz has become a much-valued entertainer with his range of trick shots.

“He really is brilliant,” Weiss said, “and anyone can come and watch him on Tuesday.”

The daily competitions and the charities being supported are:

Sunday: betterball stableford, Herald Christmas Cheer; Monday: four-ball alliance, SAPS – Widows Fund; Tuesday: betterball medal stableford, SPCA; Wednesday: four-ball alliance, WESSA – Rhino; Thursday: betterball bonus bogey, Lake Farm; Friday: betterball medal, Reach for a Dream; Saturday: individual stableford, Els for Autism
