PHILBRO Fight Academy in conjunction with Mini Gym will bring boxing to Uitenhage when they stage an amateurs tournament this weekend.
About 60 young boxers aged from six to 19 years will participate in the showdown.
South African Thai boxer and head coach of Philbro Fight Academy Louis Phillip has been training and nurturing street kids in Uitenhage to give them a purpose in life and steer them away from bad habits.
“There are a lot of street kids in this town. As a trainer it as my responsibility to bring sport to them. I don’t want to die with my experience, I want to pass it on.
“I’m trying to bring boxing, kick- boxing and self defence back to town. I want to continue training them and I’m hoping in five years the town won’t have any street kids.”
The South African light flyweight Mzwabantu Dabaza, who assists Phillip with training the young boxers, said the youngsters were fit and ready for the tournament.
The showdown takes place in John Street at an open field in Kwanobuhle on Saturday at 2pm. Professional boxers like the new Eastern Cape Heavyweight Champion Unathi Jacob will help with judging and refereeing.
Phillip aims to expand the event to include the whole Nelson Mandela Metro. “I just need assistance and support with buying food and cool drinks for the children to keep them happy and entertained.”
