EASTERN Province held their KFC Mini Cricket Provincial Festival at Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide on Friday, involving 700 young players.

Cricketers came from all corners of the Eastern Province, including the townships, northern areas and the city, to attend the day’s activities.

The festival, which was opened by EP Cricket president Malcolm Figg, has seen many top cricketers come through its programme.

National stars such as fast bowlers Makhaya Ntini, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Mfuneko Ngam are all products of the mini cricket programme.

The sponsors were represented by the its national coordinator, David Mokopanele, and Ryan Cumming.

The purpose of the festival is to give young players extra exposure to cricket.

This year, it was decided to take the festival to the townships, in line with the CSA strategic plan of taking the sport to the people.

The aim for coaches was to identify talent at the festival and those players will be channelled to the existing provincial under-11 squad.
