THE Grey High under-14 water polo team posted some excellent results in the Itec tournament in Bloemfontein at the weekend before being shaded 5-4 by Rondebosch in the final.
The event is known as the unofficial SA U14 schools’ championship and 20 of the top waterpolo schools from around the country competed for the coveted Itec trophy.
In their pool matches, Grey recorded wins over Affies (23-2), St Albans (14-5), Jeppe (20-1), KES (5-3) and Northwood (15-4).
Their quarterfinal was against top KwaZulu-Natal school Clifton, a match Grey won 2-1.
In the semifinals, Grey faced brother school Grey College, who had just beaten St John’s 10-3. The PE school demonstrated their intentions by winning 14-3 to book a spot in the final against the unbeaten Rondebosch side.
In an extremely evenly contested final, which saw the lead change hands several times, Grey eventually went down 5-4.
While losing the final, Grey came home with two of the three individual awards. Jordan Blewett was named player of the tournament and Travis de Bruin was chosen as goalkeeper of the tournament.
